When Evil Calls

When Evil Calls

This movie is low-budget, in both look and feel. Originally the concept was designed as a British mobile phone series that contained 20 two-minute episodes that could be sent to your phone. The films distributor decided these segments were unique and interesting and decided to piece them all together to make a coherent feature film.

One new idea for the feature is to have Sean Pertwee provide an introduction to each segment with the main story of Samantha (Jennifer Lim) being the most prominent arc that holds everything together. Samantha goes to a private school and is constantly the subject of ridicule and bullying. One day she makes an out loud wish that she was the most popular girl in school, suddenly a phone genie pops out and grants her wish. Be careful what you wish for is the moral here, as the clown (Oscar Pearce) appears all around the school granting students what they wish for initially but then turning it around on them in the end.

The whole concept and story is absurd, with every aspect of the film way over the top. The acting, if that’s what it can be called, is awful, the gore is bloody for shock value and the comedy not even so bad it’s funny.

You couldn’t even call this a guilty pleasure – it has a large amount of sex and nudity but the effects are poor and the direction non-existent. A stupid film constructed in a silly structure that’s mind numbingly dull.

If Evils calls, my advice would be not to pick up… AVOID!
